I studied at Rugby School of Art and Design and De Montfort University combining this with bringing up my four wonderful children who continue to encourage me in my work. I currently lecture at Leicester College of Further Education in Art and Design since 1998 and teach at the Adult Education Centre in Leicester since 2000. My own contemporary art practise is inspired from working en pein air. I am continuously and consistently observing and capturing the sea, sand and rocks in particular around the coastal area of North Norfolk, Devon and Cornwall and as far afield as the North Cape. I frequently paint in all weathers throughout the year using oil paint on canvas or paper from the moment I arrive until dusk. It is often freezing cold with bracing winds and isolated in the Winter months but always inspiring. The Winter light is not only fantastic but also unique, as it falls over the sand when the tide ebbs away. When I am too cold to paint anymore, the evening light beckons me to stay a while longer and the feeling of cold disappears. There is a magical, inner sense of freedom I feel when walking the strandline or painting when I am next to the sea and it is here I feel I do my best work. The paintings shown, I feel reflect the light, atmosphere, mood, colour and weather conditions of the day not to reproduce but to convey a moment in time through suggestive, sensitive application of mark making to convey the visual experience. |
